Over the past few weeks both Ian Greenblatt and I, Brian Cohen, have visited with the school two different High Schools for their student career planning efforts
My set up was a little different then Ian’s. In our case we held small group discussions with students. Our group lent itself toward guest speakers. They were trying to decide who to bring in as a guest speaker and whom should they speak with. That is a great question and very insightful on the students part. The other business person I was with is in the same industry yet she conducts herself and focuses her business in a totally different manner.
Got me thinking about the value proposition any business has. Those that have one, yes, those that have one have a very clear mission statement and a strong determination to see success. Usually this will mean that the person has an emotional connection to the business besides money. And that usually means it is something that they are emotionally attached to. Bringing that back to the students I thought it would be very beneficial for them to hear about why someone has pursued a specific career, not just a job title.
This brings us back to the original question, do you volunteer time time?
Many times when I volunteer my time I wind up gaining much more from the experience then anticipated. Not business, but that feeling that perhaps you have influenced someones life in a positive manner. This visit to the school was a prime example of that. To see these students so engaged in their learning experience was great. But also the teachers and the company that was coordinating this entire effort was inspiring.
From a pure business perspective you meet others that are also successful in their careers. Most tend to be business owners or in a sales position allowing them the time to participate in these programs.
But what drives us to do this is being a part of something that helps others. A salesperson is designed is to see things through the eyes of others. We got a chance to revisit our High School days. Ian really did as he went to the same High School that this program is taking place in. We walked hallways that took us back to a time when everything was possible. We took back with us that knowledge that everything is possible. We have a greater understanding of the challenges, but we also have a cleaer vision in our mind as to what success means to us.
If you do not volunteer your time, then you should. You will not only help others but you will also see what your own goals, dreams and talents are in a much clearer way.
